Turmeric, Skin Care & Melanin

Turmeric, also known as the Golden Spice, has longstanding origins in the Vedic culture of India. Common uses of this multi-tasking spice includes religious significance, culinary consumption as well as topical application for a variety of reasons. In skincare, Turmeric, which steams from the ginger family, has been proven to have a multitude of benefits when used topically.

A few benefits of turmeric in skincare:

Inflammation Control

Hyperpigmentation Management

Acne and Blemish Control

Improved Skin Barrier Function

Inflammation Control:

The active compound in Turmeric, curcumin, has powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammatory skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, acne and even hyperpigmentation, can be more prevalent in individuals with melanated skin. Turmeric can help reduce redness, itching, and inflammation associated with these conditions.

Hyperpigmentation Management

As mentioned in previous blog posts, individuals with melanated skin are more prone to hyperpigmentation. Turmeric can help fade dark spots and even out the skin tone, making it especially valuable for those with hyperpigmentation. At higher amounts, turmeric has the ability to tint the over tone of the skin a golden yellow, which is particularly beautiful on melanated skin. This is why you often see turmeric associated with brightening and evening out skin tone.

Acne and Blemish Control

Melanated skin is not immune to acne, and turmeric's antimicrobial properties can help combat acne-causing bacteria and reduce the risk of scarring. It's particularly beneficial for individuals who may be prone to keloids or dark spots after acne (post inflammatory hyperpigmentation aka PIH)

Improved Skin Barrier Function

Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, lends to its anti-oxidative properties which may help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Also, curcumin has been shown to significantly improve the skins barrier function (by up-regulating involucrin and filaggrin, which are known regulators of the skin barrier). This is promising for several diseases that are associated with deficient skin barrier function, including atopic dermatitis.
