Got Dark Spots? Get To Know Tyrosinase Inhibition

If you’re reading this, chances are you’re familiar with hyperpigmentation, a condition characterized by the darkening or increased pigmentation of specific areas on the skin. Among the various types of hyperpigmentation (melasma, sun spots), one of the most common is Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH). You might recall those frustrating moments when a pimple turns into a dark mark, lingering for weeks on end.

Melanocytes, the remarkable skin cells responsive for holding the pigment melanin, are large and reactionary in nature. Hyperpigmentation occurs as an inflammatory response when our skin expresses the enzyme tyrosinase, leading to an excess production of melanin. That’s where tyrosinase inhibitors come into play.

Tyrosinase, an enzyme that participates in the overproduction of melanin, can sometimes trigger an inflammatory response that looks like dark spots or uneven skin tone. Tyrosinase inhibitors have the capacity to regulate and balance the rate at which melanin is produced in our skin, allowing for a more harmonious and even-toned complexion.

There are multiple types of tyrosinase inhibitors that can be used in skincare. Let’s discuss the one’s included in BLK LABEL SOCIETY's skincare line:
