The WHY behind our Body Care collection

The WHY behind our Body Care collection

At BLK LABEL SOCIETY, we understand the uniqueness of melanated skin, and our goal is to create a collection that synergistically works to nourish, especially melanated skin, while providing an optimal environment that is healthy, radiant and balanced.

Our bodies, along with nature, will always seek homeostasis. From grade-school Science class, you should remember that means balance. When it comes to skin, we want to keep our skin barrier happy. If you were to ask someone with rich melanin, what skin issues that had, if any, they might reply with ‘dry skin’ or ‘dark marks’.

This is because in melanated skin, we often see increased rates of Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL) aka skin dryness and lower ceramide levels, all of which leads to increased dryness in the skin. You also have to consider that the skin cells that hold pigment in melanated individuals, are larger and inflammatory in nature. This results in the over production of melanin in the skin aka dark marks or body hyperpigmentation.

You could understand how melanated skin could benefit from a skin care routine that addresses these unique traits. That was exactly our thought process when formulating our Body Care Collection.

Water on its own, evaporates way too quickly to be sufficient enough to hydrate the skin, especially skin that is in need of hydration to begin with. However, if you pair a water-based cream with an occlusive formula, THEN you are on to something! Essentially, applying an oil-based product on top of hydrated skin, is the key to locking in moisture! That oil-based barrier is going to allow the water to not evaporate as quickly and get absorbed by the skin.

Our Body Cream and Solid Body Oil is packed with skin-nourishing ingredients. One the next blog post, we will expand on each product and why we selected the ingredients. But for now, feel free to read our product description that will tell you all you need to know.
